[In Bullet Points] The Fall of Five by Pittacus Lore

The Fall of Five
(Lorien Legacies #4)
Author: Pittacus Lore
Publisher: Penguin UK
Publication Date: August 27th, 2013
Pages: 342 (UK Paperback)
Genre: YA – Adventure, Paranormal, Science-Fiction

I thought things would change when I found the others.
We would stop running. We would fight the Mogadorians. And we would win.
But I was wrong. Even though we have come together, we barely escaped from them with our lives. And now we’re in hiding, figuring out our next move.
The six of us are powerful — but not strong enough to take on their entire army. We haven’t discovered the full extent of our Legacies. We haven’t learned to work together. Time is running out, and there’s only one thing we know for certain: we need to find Number Five before they do.
They caught Number One in Malaysia. Number Two in England. And Number Three in Kenya. I am Number Four. I was supposed to be next.
But I am still alive.

The battle is far from over.

In bullet points…

What I liked:

  • Most of the characters, like the badass and practical Six, the violent-loving and blunt Nine, the kind-hearted Marina and OMG EIGHT! Marina didn’t really stand out for me in the previous books but I grew to love her character and friendly personality. OH AND I NEED MORE EIGHT!!
  • The romance between Marina and Eight is so heartbreaking considering what happen at the end of the book :’( I NEED MORE OF THEM…
  • The climax of the book is so tense and action-packed, unlike the first 80%. I think it’s the best part of the book. There’s a surprising revelation that left me “WTF YOU KIDDING ME? NO WAY NO WAYYY?! WHERE’S BOOK 5???”
  • The writing works really well with action scenes!

What I didn’t like:

  • The dominating romance. Part of the reason why the last 20% is so badass is because nothing actually happens before. The first 80% is romance-filled and drama-filled. Some of the events I had been waiting for since the previous books happen just like THAT and I was like “that’s it? THAT’S IT?? SERIOUSLY?!” I expected more…. :/
  • Some of the characters like Sarah (yes, I still hate her until now) and Five. I WANNA PUNCH FIVE IN THE FACE!! And John (Number Four) is the leader-like guy in the book but he just seems too perfect and I found his character less likable. It felt like he gets the spotlight far too often from the previous books until now. However, I’d like to see his future development after witnessing THAT EVENT at the end of the book.
  • The writing felt like telling instead of showing at the non-battle parts. I think some dialogues aren’t necessary and rather useless.

Conclusion:

Lorien Legacies series is indeed going downhill. The plot feels like a drag and I think it would have been better to make this series a trilogy instead of adding more books and ends up dragging the story. I was at the brink of giving The Fall of Five two stars due to the dominating romance but this book is saved by awesome characters (mostly) and the last 20%. Plus, in the end The Fall of Five gave me the urgency to read the next book (which will be released next year ._.) and SOOOO MANY FEELS!!!

  1. First, I have to say I love this review format! It’s so much easier to read because I’m like totally ADD-paragraphs don’t hold my attention for too long! I think I might try this reviewing style soon.

I have read only Lorien Legacies #1 and I don’t think I’ll be picking the rest of the books because I didn’t like the first much.
Lovely review-thanks for sharing your thoughts, Kezia!

    1. Thank you, Nuzaifa! I was really lazy too write a full review so I decided bullet points would be best! I am so glad that you found my review style helpful 😀

Haha, I didn’t really like the first book either! But the second book was far better, and then the rest just went downhill :/ Good decision though!

  2. I never continued with the series after I finished I Am Number Four simply because the book doesn’t really hold my attention. I’m glad you’re continuing with this series though and hopefully the next one is going to be good. My favorite thing out of the first book is Bernie Kozar (but he died, right?) Great review, Kezia 🙂

    1. Haha, I definitely understand your opinions. I totally can see why this series will not appeal to some people.

OMG I TOTALLY FORGOT TO MENTION BERNIE KOZAR D; He hasn’t died though…

  3. Yeah I watched the movie. O___O Haha just because the books felt uninteresting and the movie, no offense, sucked. There weren’t lots of badassing around! I was expecting more! I’m guessing the books are a little bit better but not really?

    1. Haha no offense taken! I kinda liked the movie but then I read the book and the movie just seems horrible after that. I mean, SO. MANY. CHANGES. O_O The second book was the best IMO but the rest? Meh.

    1. Totally agree! I was like NOOOO EIGHT and the ending was totally unexpected! I mean THAT scene. I never thought Pittacus Lore would go into that direction. This book would be tons better if only the first half had more actions.

  5. Oh, I’m sorry this series is going downhill! I’ve not even thought to pick these novels up considering my towering TBR but I did enjoy the movie of I Am Number Four. 😉 I know, I know, not meant to watch the movie before reading the book. I’m terrible! :3

I really don’t like it when the romance dominates the plot either… It really takes away from the overall book.

Great review though! I hope you enjoy the next instalment more so than you did this one! 😀

    1. Lol I saw the movie first too!! But then I read the book and saw. All the differences between them O_O I liked the second book better but the third one was ordinary now after I have thought about it… I will still pick up the next book though cause I’m curious of what will happen next!

  6. I’m way behind with my Lorien Legacies books, but after this review, I’m not too excited to get on with the series anymore. I kind of expected something more climatic in THE FALL OF FIVE, since I think the story is coming to an end, but nooo. Yeah, I agree that the book should have just ended at three. I mean, it’s better to keep your readers entertained with a thick and juicy book, rather than to just keep on dragging it out. Unless you’re Rick Riordan or J.K. Rowling, of course. ;D

Marina was one of the reasons why I gave up on THE FALL OF SIX. I intend to get back into it once I have the time, but reading from her perspective… it wasn’t as interesting compared to John’s. I love Six, too! At least, from what I remember of her in I AM NUMBER FOUR. She’s such a kickass character. And I’m really curious to know who this mysterious Eight is and what makes the romance between him and Marina so swoon-worthy.

Though, eh, if the romance takes up a lot of the plot, then I wouldn’t be too happy either. It’s not what I expected from Pittacus Lore! I mean, this isn’t a romance fantasy, so don’t turn it into one! I don’t get why many YA authors these days feel the need to have heavy romance in their books. Authors, this is NOT what makes a book young adult.

Not quite sure when I’ll be getting to the rest of the Legacies, but I’m not feeling any rush to do so right now. Still, I’m glad you enjoyed this overall, even if some of the characters did annoy you and the writing was more telling than showing (it makes it so tedious to read!). I’ll be sure to keep these in mind. Lovely review, Kezia!

P.S. I agree with Nuz: this review style is great!

  7. I’ve bought this book and I’m dying to read it but I’m currently reading House of Hades! There were so many good books that came out this year. (I’m excited for Allegiant 2moz) To be honest I think this series has gone down hill and the first one was way better but I still love this series.

  8. I really liked the movie adaption of the first book, but I’ve never gotten around to starting this series. I actually wouldn’t mind a lot of romance but the ‘you anticipate it, then it’s over too soon’ bit worries me. Cool review honey, sorry you feel this series is on the slide. Hate it when that happens!
