[Random Talk] Once Upon a Time: Season 1

I know this is NOT bookish at all but I feel like sharing. 😛

For Emma Swan, life has been anything but a happy ending. But when she is reunited with Henry – the son she gave up for adoption ten years ago – on the night of her 28th birthday, everything changes. The now 10-year-old Henry is in desperate need of Emma’s help because he believes from reading a book of fairy tales that she’s the long-lost daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming – who sent her away from the Enchanted Forest to be protected from a curse that was enacted by the Evil Queen. Emma initially refuses to believe a word of Henry’s story but soon finds that his hometown of Storybrooke, Maine is more than it seems. Because it’s in Storybrooke that all of the classic characters we know are frozen in time with no memories of their former selves – except for the Evil Queen, who is Storybrooke’s mayor and Henry’s adoptive mother Regina Mills. Now, as the epic “Final Battle” for the future of both worlds approaches, Emma will have to accept her destiny and uncover the mystery behind a place where fairy tales are to be believed.

I love retellings, especially fairy tale retellings, thus I was instantly interested in Once Upon a Time when my friend first recommended it last year. I have lots of spare time now and I thought, “Why not give it a chance?”

So I just finished watching the first season a few days ago. It was like fairy-tale-retelling-fest but with new twists that weren’t in the original stories. Dark curse. New enemy. But only one person can break the curse and restore the happy endings of those fairy tales.

In the first episode, we are introduced to the main characters and a bit of background of how the curse happened. But starting on the second episodes onward, each episode focuses on a particular character’s past. I think Wikipedia can say it better, “One segment details the character’s past life that, when serialized, adds a piece to the puzzle about the primary and/or secondary characters and their connection to the events that preceded the curse and its consequences. The other, set in the present day, follows a similar pattern with a different outcome but also offers similar insights. In addition, another story-line follows the results of what had happened after the curse took place and after it was broken by Emma.

I did feel a bit bored some times about the fairy tale flashbacks and there were a lot of Snow White/Prince Charming flashbacks compared to the other characters. But overall, I was really enjoying this series! My favorite episodes are about Ruby/Little Red Riding Hood and the one about Jefferson/The Mad Hatter.

Emma is an independent character and to be honest I like her better than Snow White. 🙂 Speaking of the cast, I know I was supposed to figure that out in the beginning but most of them are undeniably old. They are around 30. What did I expect anyway? xD I guess I was fooled by makeup haha xP

One thing that made me laugh out loud is when Rumplestiltskin said:

“Love makes us sick, haunts our dreams, destroys our days. Love… has killed more than any disease. This cure is a gift.”

LOL, sounds like Delirium!!

Ooh, now check out this Ruby/Red pic I found on Tumblr :3

I think I will watch the second season if I have the time. 🙂

  1. I love this show! I have to admit that I enjoyed the first season more than the 2nd, but I haven’t finished the 2nd yet. I think I have 4 episodes left. August is one of my favorite characters, I think he’s awesome!

  2. This series has never really appealed to me but now I’m intrigued! I’m glad you enjoyed this though! I’ve actually never heard of a series similar to this one… I hope you get to watch the second series and enjoy it more! 🙂

  3. Lots of my friends LOVE Once Upon a Time and I often see them chatter among themselves about what happened in the latest episodes. I don’t know if I’ll watch it in the future. Right now the only TV show I’m watching is Vampire Diaries 🙂

  4. I LOVE retellings too but sadly never started this series. If it is on Netflix I think I might try it this summer! Fooled by makeup xD Hollywood is pretty good at that 😛

With Ariella, the only show I watch is the Vampire Diaries! 🙂

    1. I love rettelings too! I never used Netflix before but I may try that one for watching the second season 😛

Another Vampire Diarise fan! Seems like I gotta watch it next time 🙂

    2. Ooh, I think should try that site. Thanks for the recommendation, Alise! I’m not a huge fan of vampire stories but seeing everyone talks about it makes me a bit curious. 🙂

  5. I’ve not watched much of Once Upon A Time, but my friend keeps bugging me to! I watched the first episode and was unimpressed, but they tell me it gets better, so maybe I should try it again. 🙂

    1. It does get better, but depends on how much you like fairy tales xD I mean, if you like a certain fairy tale, then you might enjoy that episode more cause starting on episode 2 onward, it centers on a particular fairy tale character’s past. 🙂
