Seventeen-year-old Lauren is having visions of girls who have gone missing. And all these girls have just one thing in common—they are 17 and gone without a trace. As Lauren struggles to shake these waking nightmares, impossible questions demand urgent answers: Why are the girls speaking to Lauren? How can she help them? And… is she next? As Lauren searches for clues, everything begins to unravel, and when a brush with death lands her in the hospital, a shocking truth emerges, changing everything.

With complexity and richness, Nova Ren Suma serves up a beautiful, visual, fresh interpretation of what it means to be lost.

My first book by Nova Ren Suma and certainly is not going to be the last. 17 & Gone captivated me with its poignant writing and compelling story that left me breathless and my heart aching. Reviewing this book is extremely hard, but trust me, I’m being careful not to spoil anything.

The way this book is told really helped in keeping an air of mystery and eerie atmosphere. I enjoyed reading the descriptions of the missing girls, how each of them became missing and the reasons were all different from one to another. They aren’t the protagonist, but through the connection they had with Lauren was I able to sympathize with each one of them without a problem.

I love the underlying message behind this book. There were so many beautiful lines, sentences that made me tear up. Nova Ren Suma has an incredible writing that evokes so many emotions and makes you connect easily with the story.

In addition, I never guessed this book to head in that direction. Which is good because it was unexpected, but also bad because I had hoped for more. While the outcome is slightly disappointing, I’ve come to accept the bittersweet ending. It most definitely suits the tone of the story perfectly.

    1. Yep, Francoise! I’m so glad that you’ve added this book to your TBR — it was certainly a magnificent book! That is pretty much the reason I love mystery books hehe. Hope you’ll love it as well <33

  2. Oooh, I’m glad you enjoyed 17 & Gone! I agree – Nova Ren Suma’s writing is gorgeous, eerie, and created the perfect atmosphere for this book! I think I had a similar opinion with you on the end, though it’s been a while since I’ve read this. (Also, I like your Noya-san icon :3) )Great review, Kezia!

    1. It was released a couple of years ago so no wonder if you might have already forgotten about it 🙂 Lol, I was torn over a few characters but eventually I went for Nishinoya xD Glad you like it though! ;D

  3. I just recently bought a hardcover copy of this (it was on sale, lol, otherwise I wouldn’t have xD) so I’m both excited and relieved! I’ve only read one other book my Suma — Imaginary Girls — and that one was… weird, but also strangely enchanting at the same time, I guess mostly because of her writing. It’s definitely beautiful and a little melancholic at times!

It’s so nice when you’re able to relate and sympathize with the secondary characters. I know main characters are called “main” for a reason, but most of the time I find myself forgetting background characters because they’re so underdeveloped. 🙁 But wowww, this book sure sounds like a piece of work. As sad as it sounds, I don’t think I’ve read anything so beautiful that it made me feel like crying, so I’m definitely curious.

Aside from the kind of unsatisfying ending, I’m so happy you enjoyed this one, Kezia! Will be bumping this up my tbr, so hopefully I’ll get to it soon. Gorgeous review! <3
