[Book Ramble] Reading Habits!

Hey everyone! How’s your week so far? Weekend is near! ๐Ÿ˜€
Reading Habits

Today Iโ€™m gonna talk about reading habits. ๐Ÿ™‚ I have gotten into reading for almost one and a half year now. Some of these habits were there from the beginning and some I acquired through time.

One book at a time

Well, this habit started to grow on me back then when I first read Dark Guardian series by Rachel Hawthorne. I borrowed them all from my friend one by one because (1) my school bag was already full of textbooks and notebooks so I tried not to add too much extra weights (2) I got a lot of tests at that time so I couldn’t read much. Apparently, it eventually became a habit and I always try to finish the book Iโ€™m reading before starting another. I find it easier to concentrate to just one book than to divide your attention to multiple books at once. Except if the book Iโ€™m currently reading isn’t that interesting, sometimes I put it off and read other book instead. Then after I finish it I return to that not-so-interesting book and see if it gets any better. And this is quite related to my next habit:

Try to finish every book I start

I very rarely DNF a book cause I have read books which have terrible beginning but ended up enjoying them anyway. But even if after a lot of putting off and that book hasn’t gotten any better yet, then Iโ€™ll have no choice other than to DNF it. So far I’ve only DNFed one book. This was my case with Arclight. It was an eARC so I tried my best to finish it but it was so booooring that I put it off multiple times and managed to read four books before I decided to DNF it. FOUR books, people!

Wrap my paperbacks with plastic

Almost all of my books are in paperback format. The cover tends to get folded easily and to make sure my books stay in good condition, I always wrap them first with plastic (the one which is used for wrapping books of course) before reading them so at least the cover isn’t โ€œdamagedโ€ or anything. I donโ€™t need to do it to the few hardcovers I have. But of course I also:

DONโ€™T fold the pages

Iโ€™m sure some of you donโ€™t like folding the edge of pages to mark your last reading spot as well. I mean, thatโ€™s why thereโ€™s a thing called BOOKMARK! Um, no offense to those who like folding pages. ๐Ÿ˜› I usually use bookmarks that wonโ€™t damage the papers.

DONโ€™T write/highlight anything

I like having my books clean from doodles or scribbling (except if I meet the author then I will gladly ask for an autograph :D) so instead I:

Take notes for nice/important quotes

I mean, who doesn’t  ๐Ÿ˜‰ There are just some quotes too good to be missed/forgotten so I usually write them down on a piece of paper and slip it inside the book once I’ve finished reading. Or in my case with Rick Riordanโ€™s books, sometimes he gives clues about what might happen in the next book so I write down those quotes too and try to predict what would happen next.
I think I take care of my books so I donโ€™t lend them to any random people, just my friends who I can trust. ๐Ÿ˜›  But some of these don’t apply to my school textbooks! xD So that ends my post today. Anyway, I would love to hear your thoughts!! ๐Ÿ™‚
What are your reading habits?

Happy Friday! :3

  1. I prefer reading one book at a time too – if I read more than one then they usually blend together in my head. :3 I also try to finish every book I start. I only give up on books that I really struggle with finishing – if they’re too slow etc. I used to fold the corners of pages out of sheer laziness if there was no bookmarks around me but now I always make sure to have one on hand. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Great post! ๐Ÿ˜€

  2. Haha, I used to fold corners as well, but now I use bookmarks or anything that can be used to mark my last spot without damaging the papers. ๐Ÿ™‚ Yeah, I try not to read multiple books at a time cause now I write reviews and it’s much easier to write reviews if I focus on one book. Except if I’m bored with the book… xD

  3. Fantastic post! I used to dog-ear pages like a few years ago and then I stopped because my OCD seriously couldn’t take the fact that the pages were so crumpled and messed up lol. And now most of the books I read are eARCs and all that kind of stuff so I just have to open my Kindle and it’s already there! And sometimes I just remember the page number ๐Ÿ™‚ I actually read really fast too, and I can read like a single book in a few hours if I have the time to just sit down and keep reading, so usually I don’t have to start a new one, but for the really tough books that I just can’t get through I’ll put it down, like you said!

    1. I used to fold the page corners too because I was too lazy to even get a bookmark from the table (sometimes I read on the bed). But yeah I stopped when I realized that my books wasn’t in a pretty condition and most of the corners were folded… I wasn’t a fast-reader a few years ago, but now my reading speed increases cause I read more. Aww, too bad, I don’t have Kindle. (I don’t know how can I use that in my country, it said that it wasn’t available in my regions. ๐Ÿ™ Glad that you found it very useful. I usually use Adobe Digital Editions to read eARCs… Better than nothing, though! ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I have such in common with you on my reading habits, except for some few, because, of course, no one is a clone of the other, right! ๐Ÿ˜€ I read books one at a time, reading multiple books seem to freak me out in the weirdest way and I feel like I wouldn’t get the same feeling if I read more than one book at the same time. If I’m reading manga then that is an exception on reading another at the same time. ^^ I used to really picky with my books and write the date when I got them. I would also, if I don’t see anything interesting by the time the 3rd chapter came, I would just DNF it. Rejected stamp! I actually don’t mind if I fold my pages, but I like using my bookmark (even though it’s kinda distracting and catches a lot of attention so I always cover it somewhere while I’m reading XD). I tend to fold the pages of school/library books. I also like to take of the jacket of the hardcover before reading the booK! I used to tape the flap with the book so it was easy to read, but now I keep them separate incase I ever get a chance to do a giveaway. ^^ Let’s see, and I keep a quote notebook where i take down any quotes I love from books! ๐Ÿ˜€ It’s such a nerdy thing to do. Somehow I also find enjoyment in shelving my book and staring at it on the shelf. XD

    1. Yeah reading multiple mangas is an exception! Especially if it’s a long long series and still ongoing until now, you can’t possibly wait until it finishes to start another manga xD Hahaha I don’t really care with school textbooks so I just randomly fold the corners too! Oh quote notebook! That’s a really good idea. It looks more organized that way! Thanks for sharing your habits, Delaney! ๐Ÿ˜€

  5. I hate when people write in books or highlight unless its for school! and folding the pages drives me crazy. I like my books to look as brand new as I can so I can keep reading it again and again if I want. I my self like paper back better unless it from a library and they put that clear cover on it. But that is because my father bought rare and hard to find books and always put that on the fancy books. So I always feel more grown up reading books that have the clear covers ( Haha).

    1. Yeah I only highlight my school textbooks too! Lol my friends always said that my books looked brand new xD I like paperbacks cause it’s not too heavy and I can bring one in my already-filled-with-textbooks school bag. But honestly, hardcovers are really good too cause they’re more durable than paperbacks ๐Ÿ˜‰ but anyway, that’s just my preference.

  6. We have everything in common except the wrapping the book with a plastic & reading 1 book at a time. I can NEVER read 1 book at a time. I always end up reading 2-4 books at a time lol. I hate writing/highlighting in my books too except if it’s a school book. I don’t really care haha cause our tests are open books so I try to write notes from outside sources *sparknotes ehem*

    Little Book Star

    1. I don’t really care about my school books, I just scribble randomly when I got bored in class lol. Open book test? That’s is so unfair my tests are always close-book so I gotta memorize everything lol ><

  7. Hey, great share…..

I agree that by reading more books, you become better informed and more of an expert on the topics you read about. Moreover, by reading more books and exposing yourself to new and more complete information, you will also be able to come up with more creative ideas.

Thanks for sharing this post. Keep sharing more….
