Wait, where have I seen you before?

If you’re a frequent anime watcher like me, then it’s a given that certain characters will remind you of another character from a completely different series. After all, they are 2D and you can’t make an utterly unique character’s appearance every single time. Even in Indonesia, almost every one’s hair here is either black or really dark brown. Unless you dye them in different color.

Anyway, one of the examples that immediately come to mind is Haru (Free!!) and Fujiwara (Prince of Stride). They have short straight black hair with a fringe in the middle of their blue eyes. Both of them are relatively quiet as well and extremely talented in their chosen sports. I’m guessing a character with these physical traits is a must-have in sports anime, at least the hair part. (Hint: our dorky Karasuno setter, Seidou’s ace, etc.)

Haruka Nanase
Fujiwara Takeru

I also think that Kimizuki (Owari no Seraph) and Tsukki (Haikyuu!!) looks very similar. Even with the difference in hair color, I think when I first laid my eyes on Kimizuki, I was instantly reminded of Tsukki. It must be because of their tall built and black-framed glasses. Plus, their hairstyles are actually identical. But unlike Tsukki who has motivational issues, Kimizuki doesn’t seem to suffer from the same problem. I know there’s a guy who looks even more similar to Kimizuki in Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge but since I don’t watch that anime, I’m not gonna talk about it haha ^^;

Tsukishima Kei

Speaking about being identical, the last examples I got here have different hair — EXCEPT THEIR FACES THOUGH. Doppo (Bungou Stray Dogs) looks like blond Hyuuga (Kuroko no Basket) no matter how many times I try to tell myself otherwise!

Doppo Kunikida
Hyuuga Junpei

Well, that concludes my post today! There are some more characters that I’d like to mention, like Kyouya from Ookami Shoujo and Sunakawa from Ore Monogatari. Gray from Fairy Tail and Okumura Rin from Ao no Exorcist looks nearly identical as well. KyoAni characters also look similar to one another though I wouldn’t put them on the list since they belong to the same studio anyway.

Your turn! Do you have some more anime look-alikes that I’m not aware of? Be sure to tell me in the comment! ^^

  1. Did you know that Doppo & Hyuuga have the same seiyuu: Yoshimasa Hosoya? Actually it wasn’t the design that made them similar to me; it was both their voices & personalities. Since most of the anime are from manga, I think it’s understandable that there are several instances were character designs are similar. Some mangakas were assistants first, so they kinda picked up a style from the mangaka they assisted to. Then there are popular art style that appealed to viewers/readers so they tend to lean on designs that are more likely picked up by readers.

    For me that most similar are Arima (Mune ga Naru no wa Kimi no Sei) and Mabuchi (Ao Haru Ride), Kise (Kuroko no Basket) and Fushimi (Watashi no Ookami-kun), Gintoki (Gintama) and Kyouya (Ookami Shoujo), Mattsun (Aoharu x Kikanjuu) and Abeno (Fukigen na Mononokean) among others (seriously I have so many examples but enough of me rambling, LOL)

    1. Wait they do? I thought Doppo’s voice sound familiar but I didn’t expect it to be Yoshimasa Hosoya’s voice >_< And I think you're right about where the similarities come from. I heard that some animators are freelancers and they take up several shows at a time so no wonder certain character designs look similar. They're done by the same person after all. I actually look up all your examples and I agree with them except for Gintoku and Kyouya. But that's probably because I don't watch Gintama so I can't see it properly. I get a lot of "OHHH I THINK YOU LOOK LIKE ____" when I'm watching but I forget most of them after that xD

  2. I’m sure I’ve encountered a billion anime lookalikes, but they are NOT coming to my head at the moment. Even though I only watched one episode of Prince of Stride, I totally noticed the similarities between Haru and whats-his-face up there!

    I’ll be back here if I think of some. But I probably won’t hahah.

    1. Ahaha that was me when I was writing this post! To be honest, I got the idea last week but I was lazy and didn’t take any notes about it. Which was why I had forgotton most of the examples, hence the little amount of characters xD

  3. I think your point at the beginning that you can’t make a completely unique character every time is so accurate. It totally applies outside of anime too! 2D does make it more difficult though.
